THE RED SERIES. It’s said that if you want to spark great, passionate, intense conversation in a room, paint a wall red. Or, I invite you to display one of these deeply emotional pieces from The Red Series, which integrate the power of the circle to reflect the intense feelings so many of us are experiencing in these times—reflecting on a society based on a Constitution written by white men, most of whom were slave owners. The paintings represent snapshots of time in America’s political and social culture. I see and experience America through a unique lens—that of a gay immigrant to this country. Today, politicians continue to hash out laws that fit within its framework, and individual citizens stir the conversation through the megaphone of social media. I’ve used red—the color known to elevate heart rates, stimulate hunger, and that is associated with love, passion, anger, happiness, and joy—along with the energy of circles to create lasting works that cause reflection, inspire conversation, and serve as a reminder that your voice, and your vote, are crucial in shaping our world.
